One of the most important functions performed by the Office of the National Health IT Coordinator (ONC) is to administer the ONC Health IT Certification Program (the Program). A critical aspect of the program is to ensure that certified health informatics meets established requirements to give users confidence that health informatics performs according to those requirements. Testing in controlled test environments has been a cornerstone of program processes; however, it is also important to measure the performance of systems in the field, just as drug development assesses both laboratory and real-world effectiveness.
To that end, the 21st Century Cures Act required ONC to include real-world testing as a condition of certification in the program, which ONC implemented as part of the final rule. of the Cure Law. The program's real-world testing processes require certified healthcare IT developers to demonstrate the interoperability and functionality of their products in real-world environments. December 15, 2021 was the deadline for Certified Health IT Developers to submit their first real-world test plans that will measure performance in 2022. ONC is pleased to note that 100% of Certified Health IT Developers Certified healthcare providers subject to this requirement have submitted their evidence in real-world plans!

ONC has worked closely with ONC Accredited Certification Bodies (ONC-ACB) and the developer community throughout 2021, and we thank our industry partners for their commitment to real-world performance goals. at the point of service, where it matters most. . Although the program has reached its first stage of real-world testing and is off to a good start, the work has only just begun! By March 15, 2023, the results of these test plans covering performance in 2022 will be published in the CHPL, providing the market with the first comprehensive view of actual certified health IT performance.
Health IT is dynamic and constantly changing, so real-world testing will be an ongoing annual process to keep pace. By December 15 of each year, certified health informatics developers must submit updated plans for testing in the following calendar year, with results publicly available by March 15 of the following year .
